Summary

Fresh perspectives on how good design can create stylish yet ecologically sound living spaces in small-scale homes。 Anyone who has faced the challenges of limited living space will find inspiration in this survey of the latest trends in environmentally sensitive, small-scale residential designs。 More than fifty residential spaces are profiled—from woodsy houses and repurposed barns to cool apartments and urban lofts—both inside and out。 Most of the projects were designed by up-and-coming architects, and each design proves that small-scale efficiency as well as beautiful, thoughtful design can overcome the apparent constraints of a small setting。 Environmental impact is a growing concern, so each project was chosen because of its ecological sensitivity。 Each case history describes the challenges confronting the designer and the solutions。 Creating color schemes to enhance the feeling of openness, taking advantage of high ceilings to make multiple levels, and using collapsible furniture and sliding doors to maximize space are some of the design solutions that can be applied in any situation。 Filled with beautiful color photographs and helpful floorplans, this book is a remarkable showcase of how good design can transform any small space into a comfortable, modern—and environmentally sensitive—home。

Enjoyable view into some great places。 Some of the schematics should have been resized, as without that they were unreadable。

It's a well done intro with nice pictures。 I liked the inclusion of floorplans, but wish there were some more interior pics。 There was a feeling that many of these pictures were taken from across the street。 Still, a great little coffee table book。 It's a well done intro with nice pictures。 I liked the inclusion of floorplans, but wish there were some more interior pics。 There was a feeling that many of these pictures were taken from across the street。 Still, a great little coffee table book。 。。。more

I wouldn’t consider this reading so much as looking… The book is mostly pictures with a meager paragraph for each house。 I would have preferred less houses but in depth green building design。 The text did not explain when a specific concept was introduced。 Basic concepts were repeated while the aspects that made the houses unique from one another were not。 I understand this is not a practical guide to green building but saying that windows require less electricity usage。。。 really? Lightning isn’t what contributes to most electricity use, climate control however, is much higher usage。 More windows means lower R value。 Double pane windows are expensive in the first place so the energy savings from lightning reduction would not pay itself off, at least not in a desirable time frame。 Specific metrics change over time but the energy consumption of each home could have been touched on。 I did enjoy the diversity of homes presented especially in terms of geological location。 。。。more

Loved the ideas for usage of space in these houses, especially the ones under 1,800 square feet。

Sadly I found that the homes photographed in this book were mostly incredibly ugly。 Still, an interesting look at what different people have done to make their homes more eco friendly。

this is a beautiful little book, with lots of wonderful ideas for a very small house living lightly on the land。 A great resource published by a division of Rizzoli。

This book is worth the read, it has wonderful pictures and nice architectural drawings to accompany the authors description of the homes。 The designs are very post-modern and most have a prefab mobile home feel gone expensive in a very small package。 If your looking for a book on self sufficient home building with natural onsite material then look elsewhere。 This book is more of a study in use of prefab materials and small efficient designs and did I mention they are small。 The author's mantra s This book is worth the read, it has wonderful pictures and nice architectural drawings to accompany the authors description of the homes。 The designs are very post-modern and most have a prefab mobile home feel gone expensive in a very small package。 If your looking for a book on self sufficient home building with natural onsite material then look elsewhere。 This book is more of a study in use of prefab materials and small efficient designs and did I mention they are small。 The author's mantra seems to be less is more, and although I can emythize with that philosophy I believe the size and simplicity of some of the homes are taken to an extreme。Overall i enjoyed the book and found myself returning to it in the subsequent days after finishing it to look at the pictures again。 If nothing else it helps one to think outside of the box。。。 or home。 。。。more
